On 1 November snap elections for the parliament will be held in Turkey, after the AKP (Justice and Development Party) failed to form a coalition government with opposition parties after the last general elections in June. The AKP is aiming to regain a majority of the seats, in order to establish a one-party rule once again, while opposition parties are seeking to curb president Erdogan’s (AKP) power. Voters abroad have already voted, the turnout was 45%. The ongoing unrest in the southeastern parts of the country, thousands of missing names on voters lists and the silencing of critical media ahead of the elections, have created a tense election atmosphere.
