On April 12 President Gjorge Ivanov pardoned all politicians facing criminal investigations in the wiretapping corruption scandal. Most politicians facing criminal charges from the Special Prosecution are high-ranking government and party representatives of the ruling conservative nationalist VMRO-DPMNE. Opposition leader Zaev from the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), called for President Ivanov’s resignation, saying he would not accept the decision to halt the investigation and pledged to boycott the parliamentary elections in June, saying they could not be certain of a fair contest.
