On 20 October European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said he was disappointed no deal was reached between the Macedonian government and opposition on a reshuffle of government. An EU brokered agreement between the ruling conservative nationalist VMRO-DPMNE and opposition party Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) and its allies, aimed at ending the political crisis in the country, was reached in July but progress has been limited. The SDSM has accused the VMRO-DPMNE of trying to “buy time until the last moment”, while last week the SDSM suspended its participation in the talks. Both the EU and the US have been pressuring both sides to commit to the crisis talks, ahead of snap elections in April 2016.
