On 17 January Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic called for early local and parliamentary elections in the country. Vucic said his government, in power since 2014, has been held back by opposition and the elections are needed to "to solve the social conflict that is blocking reforms." President Tomislav Nikolic is expected to soon approve Vucic’s call for the elections, that are likely to take place in April or May.
