On November 1st , snap elections were held in Turkey, which saw the long ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) win enough seats in parliament to once again establish a single party rule. The AKP secured almost half of the votes, as the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) lost considerably compared to the June parliamentary elections, while the result of the main opposition Republican People’s party (CHP) remained almost equal. The AKP’s surprising landslide win will raise the chances of a constitutional amendment that could see Turkey transition to a presidential system, in line with president Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ambitions.
